MTV Snubs Influential Gamer

You ain't seen the best of me yet
Give me time I'll make you forget the rest

You may have seen MTV's 10 Most Influential Video Gamers Of All Time list.  If you're like me, you saw it only because you read Penny Arcade.

Here's the thing: I should be on that list.  I feel cheated.  Even as we speak, my lower lip is a-quiver.  I'm not saying Tycho and Gabe don't deserve a spot, perhaps even the number 1 spot.  But goddamit, there are 10 spots.  That's 9 other spots, any of which I'd have been perfect for.

You may be saying to yourself "Amber, wtf?  You haven't done a goddamned thing to make yourself an "influential" gamer."  And you would, of course, be right.  But although you, dear sayer of nays, are a veritable river of hard, cold facts, you are also a desert of imagination.  This is a list "Of All Time."  Not just "Up 'til Now."

Let's look at the facts.  It's a forgone conclusion that I will someday be an influential gamer.  The logic of this is incontrovertible.  Entire sections of E3 conferences and Superbowl Halftime shows will be reserved for my influence.  I daresay there could be peddling.  Influence peddling. The world's going to be an exciting place someday.

So go ahead MTV, snub me if you will.  But you will rue the day, my friends.  One day my influence will be…very…influency, and then you're just going to have to post a retraction.  Oh yes, a retraction.  You may be feeling the burn already.

Update:  Go sign the petition that Ken was gracious enough to start. This is why I blog.  You're all like my personal little support group.  When I rule the world, there will be 2 types of people.  Those who signed the petition, and those in the camps.

I took the liberty of taking the next step with your cause.

Your petition is ready for signatures.

Perhaps a working link would be better.
    Take 2: Petition

  3. Amber Says:

Ken, for starting the petition that will eventually lead to my crowning as Top Influential Gamer Of All Time, not only will you be spared from the camps but you can also have your pick of any swag I don’t want at future game conferences held in my honor.

What about John Romero and John Carmack, not saying that Amber shouldn’t be a part of that list, I’m in fact outraged that they wouldn’t add her. Whoever it was that did the research on this article made a gross over site by not including her, not even a comment saying something to the effect of these are the top ten after Amber. Looks like someone down there is going to get the chair soon. Am I covered now, few, can never be too careful with that stuff. Never know what tomorrow is going to bring.

But John Romero and John Carmack created Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Quake, and subsequent sequels to Doom and Quake. Which pretty much invented the FPS culture that we have today. If that’s not worthy of note I don’t even know why were talking about the subject, because whatever perspective they’re working from I want to have no part in.

Amber, look at it this way:

The people who made the list, even if we leave aside their inexplicable exclusion of yourself and consider only their other omissions, are clearly clueless (the first hint was the mtv URL, and it really only goes downhill from there). So not being on the list should be taken as a compliment.

ambernight.com is a cool site, full of lovely content to pass the hours reading.

  7. Amber Says:

Heh. I probably could have put a little more thought into a pseudonym. Still, it’s not quite as bad as the mattress connection.

You want in an MTV list?!?

    (just couldn’t resist that)

I can’t really believe this list is the 10 best GAMERS. I mean, two “gamers” from a sandbox (SL is a great sandbox, but there is no winning. Thus, imho, it is not a game).

And, Amber, rest easy…even Fatal1ty only got a mention :)
