That’s no moon…it’s a pie chart!
Bad news on the doorstep
I couldn’t take one more step
This MMOGChart breaks down just how much WoW pwns the MMO space. Answer? If the MMO market were represented as WoW battlegrounds, your wait time would be aproximately 17 years.
Via Sex & Games.
Edit: I don't know why the first link isn't working, but you can find the chart here.

What the hell? People play runescape? 6 times as many people as EQ or UO? Is that accurate? Or is it one of those “this is how many people have ever tried a free trial offer in the history of our game” kinda deals?

@Joe: It’s true

As much as I think runescape probably does trounce around with those kinda numbers, I always have a bad feeling about looking at Sir Burce’s numbers. Some companies don’t provide them and he goes by his estimates in some cases (check out the FAQ question 2). There is no universal definition of a player (does WoW count all the people who have that extra friend install as a person? Does EQ2 count anyone who has downloaded Trial of the Isle? SOE doen’t give numbers though do they? I just think that chart needs to be taken with a shovel of salt.

Runescape is a free, web-based, advertiser-supported game. You can’t compare it to WoW or EQ or DAoC. Entirely different market.
Blizzard has stated that they count only paying accounts in good standing. But they are worldwide, whereas a game like EverQuest is largely North American and some Western European.
If you really wanted to compare the games in a real way, you’d have to compare apples to apples. WoW, EQ, EQ2, DAoC, and Lineage 2, for instance, in North America.
Guild Wars, Diablo 2, Neverwinter Nights and Dungeons & Dragons Online in Asia.
Apples with apples.

Nah, Runescape isn’t in a different genre, it’s just presented differently. It is advertiser supported, but also relies heavily on $5/mo subscriptions to members-only content.

Runescape actually does have that many subscribers. A link in that post shows that the brothers that created the game are the 10th richest people under 30 in the U.K. So, they did something right if you want to measure success in terms of wealth.
Some info for ya.
