Don’t Forget To Pack Your Judgement Jammies

You might expect to hear these words being spoken on Al Jazira:

"I want to see them as radically laying down their lives for the gospel as they are in Palestine, Pakistan and all those different places," Fisher said. "Because, excuse me, we have the truth."

But not so much, really.

They were spoken by Pastor Becky Fischer, a Christian extremist who runs a Bible camp for kids in North Dakota.  It's the subject of a new documentary, Jesus Camp, due out this weekend.

Pastor Becky

My "no shit Sherlock" prediction: Fundamentalist Christians will rally around Pastor Becky, as if her particular brand of hate were somehow different than extremist Islamic hate.  Because, you know, there's nothing more heroic than adults who are willing to sacrifice the lives of other peoples' children for their own ideals.

This little nugget contrasts nicely with the Pope's recent comments, referencing an obscure medieval text, that said some teachings of the Prophet Mohamed were “evil and inhuman.”  Yes, most acknowledge that his remarks were controversial.  But imagine the outrage if an Islamic leader had said it.

Unfortunately, we treat Christian extremism differently than we treat Islamic extremism.  You might remember the outrage at Janet Reno when the FBI assault on a Waco terrorist coven known as the Branch Davidians went so terribly wrong.  The fact that Koresh and minions were Christians and had white skin probably has a lot to do with how right-wing critics can speak of Waco as an irresponsible disaster propagated by an out of control Clinton administration, yet continue to support a war in the Middle East that makes Waco look like a pillow fight in comparison.

Coming up, Christian Fundamentalists fly airplanes into buildings.  TSA reacts by profiling anyone in a turban.

On a not so related note of religion…

If any organization has a secret society it would have to be the oldest, most long standing one still in existence. *cough* Roman Catholic Church *cough*

More on topic, it makes no difference who preaches violence and under what disguise. It is still very evil. (Oh noes I used the E word) Society’s view on fellow misguiding believers (Islam, Christianity, etc.) is that it’s ok, at least they believe in the same God I do. Pft… a good person is a good person, same as an asshole is an asshole.

I wish the US was more like Brazil and make it against the law for being racist or anti-Semitic. (look up Google’s problems with the Brazilian government)

Give it time, they can only take away all your rights and freedoms so fast you know. They will get around to it eventually. Of course, you could just go live in a shitty country where you have no rights now if you really wanted to.

I’m thankful that we (currently) have the freedom to speak openly here in the US, even if it’s hate/racist/anti-semitic speech. I would much rather have these people speaking their vitriol out in the public air for all to see, rather than fester in underground circles where there can be no critical ear.

Convincing children to become warriors in some religious war?

    WHOA!

WTF is going on here? At what point does this become child abuse?

“A lot of people die for God,” one camper said, “and they’re not afraid.”

“We’re kinda being trained to be warriors,” said another, “only in a funner way.”

WHOA! GOD DAMMIT! Hold on here. Are they seriously training kids to fight and die for their cause? How is that any damn different than the “terrorists”? Our invisible man is better than your invisible man and I’ll kill you to prove it?

For fuck’s sake!! I’m a pretty staunch anti-government, minarchist, libertarian, whatever label you want to put on it but, even Thomas Jefferson said, “The legitimate powers of government extend only to such acts as are injurous to others.”

Sounds to me like some kids are about to get injured.

The above comment from “terrorfree” came in as a moderated comment, and I came *this* close to rejecting it as spam. The exact same message is posted across many blogs, and it’s pretty clear that “terrorfree” is simply Googling and spamming. (If I’m wrong, please speak up “terrorfree”, and I’ll retract the statement.) It’s at least somewhat related to the topic though, so I’ll let it through. I just wanted readers to be aware that it’s most likely blatant propoganda.

That there is priceless comedy folks.

Extremists from any point of view are a bad thing. Be it muslim, christian, conservative, or liberal. These new crusaders need to learn a little “everything in moderation”.

Funny ya, but a little anti-climatic considering the title of this post isn’t it?
