I think it's because you rarely ever have to be right, or know what the hell you're talking about. You can make statements like "I think that [digital distribution] will not approach more than 20% of the market for the next ten years or so," and hey! You don't have to be right for 10 years, and even if you're wrong, who's going to look back 10 years? (This is why John C. Dvorak remains employed.)
