Friday Links
Special Scammy/Smedley/HitlerYouthy/Spooky edition.
This auction is to save 1 tree from being cut down on my land. I have over 200 acres of forest. The property taxes have become too much so I am left with the choice to either have it logged or THIS. Do your part to help save the trees!
What is included in this auction:
A plaque made of 100% recyled plastic will be placed beside the tree with your name and date of donation.
A certified letter saying that you have donated to save the tree and that it will not be cut.
You will be sent a updated dated picture of your tree every year.

Sometimes I like John Smedley . Is that so wrong?
Today I saw a link to this blog up on Slashdot:
http://soulkerfuffle.blogspot.com/2006/10/view-from-top.html
Over the years I have heard the loud echoes of this sort of sentiment. Just look at the headline on Slashdot
“How Warcraft really does wreck lives”
Reading this guy’s personal experience does make it sound as though it was the game itself that lead to him gaining 30 pounds, not playing the guitar anymore or doing Kung Fu.
“It’s the game’s fault.” “It’s not my fault”. “The game made me do it.” “Games encourage kids to go out on murdering sprees”… and on and on and on.
At what point do personal choices come into the picture here? This gentleman clearly made life choices about what he wanted to do with his time. I respect that. I even can respect the position that some people play these games too much, because I personally think that’s true. But the game isn’t making them do anything. The game isn’t designed to keep people playing. It’s only designed to entertain them.

You damn kids have it so easy these days. Back in my Brownies days (shuddup, the sashes were tres cool), we had to make canoes out of small rocks and AOL CDs. Nowadays, you can get a merit badge (sorry, "activity patch") by "respecting copyright." Turn in your neighbor for copying the White Album onto his iPod, and you get the Iron Patch.

And the obligatory spooky YouTube.

Oh and holy crap, new Galactica tonight!

Have a good weekend all. Peace out.

Just my personal view on Smedley. That man’s entire career is built on the addictive nature of MMORPGs. The name “Evercrack” came about for a reason, and without that characteristic Smedley would be just another unknown red-haired dweeb programmer.
Sure, it isn’t his fault someone gets hooked, just like it isn’t the fault of tobacco companies or drug dealers that their customers can’t help themselves, but they sure as hell enjoy the fruits of that addiction.

On liking Smed, yes it is. Liking him is one thing, now agreeing with one of his opinions isn’t so bad. More BSG posts please.
