2 Lord of the Rings Online Previews
Two first-impressions of the upcoming Lord of The Rings Online.
Joystiq and RPG Vault took a short look at the game.
Joystiq:
I got to play some of the still-beta game at a recent media event; the title's setting and story will be its main selling point, otherwise it resembles other MMOs — not to say that's a bad thing.
RPG Vault:
As outlined by Turbine CEO Jeff Anderson, the team's primary goal is to re-create the world in which The Lord of the Rings takes place. To this end, although players won't travel with the Fellowship, the game will offer the chance to visit many locations from the books, as well as the chance to interact with NPCs such as Strider and Gandalf.
Joystiq:
…game controls and quest system felt like other titles, and I was killing defenseless forest creatures right away. Lord of the Rings also looked like other MMOs; what I saw didn't set any new standards, but it matched competitors.
Joystiq:
Anderson said that the game's story will put players in the position of clearing the way for Frodo, "inferring that you, the player are helping on the side."
Lord of The Rings Online: Like Everquest, and you get to help the real heroes.
Yeah, this baby's just gonna jump off the shelves.

Clearing the way for Frodo? How many years is it going to take for him to get out of the Shire?
No interest in another WoW, even if it is set in Middle Earth. Though in WoW, you wouldn’t make “fellowships”, because then you’d have to share the loot.
I read one of the LotRO previews about this guy who was beside himself with joy about this totally original class called the Captain. He could make his party run fast, enhance their stats with short term buffs and debuff monster groups on the run. So, a bard. Except without the foofy clothes.
I already play EQ2 and WoW. Show me something different before you ask me to change.

I actually got to create a character and play for about half-an-hour on a friends machine/account, and can’t say that I was too impressed. The feel was OK, but overall it felt like any other MMORPG out there. Nothing ‘new’ yet to me, will try again when I can.

Well the character art is not unpleasant( why I won’t play WoW), and they have crafting( which repeated EQ2 nerfing caused me to stop playing that ). I really liked the dungeons in DDO( which Turbine also made ), they were superior to anything I’ve seen in any other game. I hope they don’t end up going with semi fast twitch mob AI again though - no “stick” key with lots of lag plus mobs that jumped around all over were a major turn off in DDO.
Verdict: I will be giving it a try and see if I like it.

Crafting in EQ2 is important again with adornments and tinkering.

Yep, Everquest II is so much better than it was a release or even a year ago. Echoes Of Faydwer kicks ass.

I’ve always wanted to roam the Faydark in its new digital digs. I might have to make a trip out that way.
