Labyrinth of the Minotaur Launches

Somebody had to report it.

Kind of a sad day for me.  I let my DAoC subscription lapse some months ago, but the release of Labyrinth really marks the end of my travels in Camelot.  When future me sits around with her friends talking about the games we played and loved, I'll wistfully say something like "I stopped playing DAoC in between Darkness and Labyrinth.

There's no need to re-hash my criticisms of the ineptitude with which Mythic have exercised on their flagship product.  You can read those rants here, here, and here if you're so inclined.  But it is telling that there seems to be a correlation between the announcement of the now defunct Imperator, and the beginning of DAoC's slide into irrelevance.  DAoC should have outlived Everquest, but Mythic (and by Mythic I mean Mark Jacobs) took their eye off the ball and became distracted with the shiny.

But I won't hold a grudge.  Mythic (and by Mythic I mean the people at Mythic who make great games) are a talented bunch of people.  Warhammer's going to be great, and if there's a game on the horizon that has any chance at all of taking a small bite out of the WoW population, this is the one.  You heard it here first.

/em catches said pin and stabs Mark Jacobs in the eye.

Talented in ruining a good mmo, that good parts being an accident to begin with. You have too much faith in Mythic, grasshoppa.

Perhaps. But it wasn’t lack of talent that made DAoC an also-ran before its time. That was a management decision (or indecision).

I don’t believe Mythic have felt the power of this fully operation EA yet, and so certainly Warhammer could be done in by suits before its time. After recent events, I’m very worried that RMT could play a role. But left up to the designers, I think it’ll be a good game.
