5 Things You Don’t Know About Me

It's a meme thing.

1.  I am shy in real life.  Almost "Yo!  Adrian!" shy.  I rarely have a snappy comeback, and social situations are hard for me.  I wish I was the person my blog thinks I am.

2.  I have written a novel.  I was in high school and reading a lot of Stephen King.  It clocks in at about 300 pages.  It hasn't been published, nor is it likely to ever be published.  It's terrible.  Not false-modesty terrible, but poorly written, derivative terrible.  A sample paragraph:

The old bistro sat just off Route 66, a mean, squat building,   beaten by weather, ravaged by time, and ignored by progress.  It   hadn't seen a customer in decades, although 2 years ago a   bored drifter with a pellet gun had stopped by to shoot out the last   unbroken pane in its dry, rotting windows.  The rusting gun now lay forgotten by the side of the road, and nobody ever missed the drifter,   or heard his unnatural screams, as he died, horribly.

This was during my "any adverb is a good adverb" stage.  Oy.

3. I have been to an Amy Grant concert.  Wait, it gets weirder.  Donny Osmond was sitting in the seat behind me.  I wouldn't have known that, but there was a line of people younger than me getting his autograph before the show started.  Somewhere in my parents' garage is a $5 bill with Donny Osmond's autograph.

4. I failed the driving portion of my driving test twice.  The first time was because I made a left turn into oncoming traffic.  The second time, I parallel parked and hit the car behind me.

5. I am terrified of heights.  Anything above the third rung on a stepladder is too much.  My dad once talked me into helping him re-shingle the roof.  He had to call the fire department to get me down.

Okay, so now I'm supposed to spread the meme, staph-like, across the intertubes. (You just know Raph's going to make a cloud thing when it's all said and done.)  Brian, Ken, Dragon, Krones, and Tipa:  In accordance with the ancient manner of the Yu-gi-oh (or is that Pokemon?), I choose you!

(Speaking of Tipa, I don't know what insanity caused me to forget to add her blog to my "Read" links, but it's there now, and you should really check her out.  That's what I get for using Bloglines.)

Five things you don’t know about me……

And maybe don’t even want to know these things. I usually don’t post personal stuff on here, but I’ve been called out by both Matt (http://forge.ironrealms.com/2006/12/27/five-things-you-dont-know-about-me/) and Amber (http://ambernight.org/archive…

BTW, you’re just an Introvert, Amber. Go get a copy of The Introvert Advantage if you haven’t already. It’ll give you a lot of insight into why you’re the quiet type. A lot of game developers are introverts, so you’ll fit in fine. :)
Hope you had a good holiday!

  3. Amber Says:

Thanks Brian, I’m going to check it out.

I’m a lot better on the introversion thing than I used to be. In middle school it was crippling. Part of it was that girls are cruel monsters, and a pack of them had my number. When I read Odd Girl Out, it was like reading from my diary. High school was a little better, and I really came out of my shell in college–”out of my shell” being a very relative thing. Blogging has actually been very cathartic.

It’s nice to know that someone else out there shares my particular neurosis. :)

I think introversion is a shared condition among many people of superior intellect..

I also want to take this opportunity to thank you for all the enjoyment you brought me in 2006. It was the beginning of the year when I found this site purely by chance by following a link that Moxcamel left in a slashdot sig, and I was able to get in on the ground floor, and witness the evolution of ambernight.org.

Here’s to continuing prosperity in 2007, more true confessions, even more coherent rants, and fewer typos.

    Happy New Year!!!

If I ever blog this is going to be the tagline. Best blogging quote ever!

Even if its terrible I think its pretty cool that you wrote a book. Almost nobody can say they wrote a book. Maybe you can go back and fix it up someday and make millions to support your gaming habit!

Dave (someone stole my cool internet name)

You might want to let your friend at West Karana know that she/he has a boat load of trojans and other nice surprises embedded in the site. I got curious and decided to check it out and got bombarded by little nasties. Good thing my protection is up to date. Then again it might have come from here……

  7. Amber Says:

@Mindkiller: Yeah, I saw that too. I sent her an email this morning, and she's aware, and presumably, working on the problem. Unfortunately there are creeps out there who want to make sure we can't have nice things. :( (Update: She's fixed it.)

@Dave: Okies, but I want royalties!

@benro: Your comment made my day, thank you!

    Now i feel retarded…

Hmm… You’re not the complete opposite of me, but you’re about halfway there. I’m not extrovert, I just alternate between outgoing and shy, depending on how interesting my company is. And then, instead of failing my driver’s test in twice, I did it zero times -again putting me at halfway. Also, I’m not scared of being up on a roof or being down on the ground, but I really don’t like being in-between the two.

    How odd.

See Brian, it’s YOUR fault I keep telling people Amber’s already a game dev. I can’t be blamed for not paying attention to details!

Probably a dumb question, but have you seen “Mean Girls,” Amber? It might be right up your alley. Or, you know, you might completely hate it and wonder where the hell I get off recommending a Lindsay Lohen movie to you, but you remind me of Tina Fey, so there.

    Love,
    Kwip

[...] Thanks to the delightful Amber, I bring in the New Year by continuin a meme that started somewhere and won’t stop with me but I’ll do my damnedest to put an end to it. Not because I’m malicious but because I’m lazy and crap. So, without further ado, five things you didn’t know about me. [...]
