Your Bonus Friday post.

It all makes sense now.

When I moved into my apartment, it took almost a week for Comcast to install my cable/internet connection.  So I did what any right-thinking gamer would do, and hooked into one of the 5-6 other wireless connections in the apartments around me.  Shortly thereafter, I launched iTunes, and this folder of music that I had never seen popped up. I thought for sure someone was crawling around my computer, so I switched to somebody elses connection, and never saw the folder again.

But now I know what really happened, and it's a cool story too. (Click on Listen at the link for the full story.)

One night, NPR reporter David Kestenbaum was listening to music on iTunes. And he was bored with his playlist. Then he noticed something strange — a mysterious folder called "Anna's Music" had popped up his screen. He'd never seen it before.

And the weird thing is, when he went to listen to the music, it was just like his. Everything he had, she had: Beck, the White Stripes, Beth Orton… It was as if he'd found his musical soulmate.

Who is Anna and how did her songs end up on Kestenbaum's computer?

    That’s beautiful.

Why she never went to meet them? I feel this is a little sad. The more special and unique one is, the harder it is to find compatible people. I would say Anna seems quite special and unique. Anyway, it is a lovely story :)

Thanks to spam email, if this happened to me, I would likely never have read the email from the person browsing my music.

My guess is that the reason their musical collections were so similar AND the reason that the lady in question didn’t want to talk was that she’d been using the borrowed wifi connection to swipe the dude’s MP3s.

Yea, I think she was embarassed and guilty about it. Most people have a pretty strong aversion to meeting people that they could arguably be said to have wronged in some manner. Plus the guy may have been looking for payback of some sort. That’s a long shot, but a girl needs to be careful all the same.

Or it’s possible that she has enough friends already that meeting new ones doesn’t have a great deal of pull. I’m in that boat. I have a full life. I have friends. I know I am probably missing out on wonderful relationships by shutting people down at an opening, but I still do it to keep things simple and comfortable. It’s a trade off.
