Peter Jackson To Direct 2 New Movies Based On Lord of the Rings Online
Take that, ActiBlizzard. Apparently Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar has been such a hit, that in addition to three spin-off novels and movies, New Zealish director Peter Jackson (The Frighteners, Meet The Feebles) has been hired to helm two additional movies, tentatively titled The Hobbit and Title to be named later. The screenplays are said to be based on the lives of the player-selectable race of Hobbits, which are loosely based on the Halfling race from Sony’s Everquest and Everquest II online games.

In this blogger’s humble opinion, it would have been a good idea to wait until much closer to the movie’s release before making the novelization available, but it’s quite possible that this is just the first of many viral ad campaigns we can expect to see in the coming months.
The burning question is, of course, with the recent death of actor Richard Harris, who will now play the role of Ian McKellen?
Congratulations Turbine!

[...] Amber created an interesting post today on Peter Jackson To Direct 2 New Movies Based On Lord of the Rings OnlineHere’s a short outlineApparently Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar has been such a hit, that in addition to three spin-off novels and movies, New Zealish director Peter Jackson (The Frighteners, Meet The Feebles) has been hired to helm two … [...]
the trilogy of viral movies were sooo cool way over the top for a game I thought, but meh its elves and dwarves I guess you really need to sell it if you want people to even try it.
I guess these 2 video’s will be leading up to an expansion for LOTRO?
and what kind of a name is “to be named later”
is that the translation of Gandalf?
seems weird.
I hear the Dwarves power-level by killing Hobbits to beat Smaug.
Ahhh a classic Amber Post. Welcome back sweetheart, we’ve missed you.
May I assume that there will be a subplot involving a character as a chicken? There better be, Andy Serkis needs the work.
Ummm…You couldnt be more wrong. There is 2 other books already.
One being called The Hobbit.
I really dont think they give 2 shits about the game and really wouldnt
make a movie based on it.Nice try though.
See now, you’re making my point for me. They released this “The Hobbit” novelization so far in advance of the movie, that people like you are starting to think that the movie is based on the book rather than the game. I just knew this would happen.
Also, I’ve already read a couple pages of the novelization (don’t want to spoil the whole movie) and I just have to say: they should have hired Terry Brooks, a well-established author with a track record of great fantasy novels, rather than some no-name hack that’s been reading too much Harry Potter. Someone like Terry Brooks would have really brought Peter Jackson’s Middle Earth to life.
I feel I must disagree, I found Terry Brooks’ writing to be rather bland.
My question is why they have only one book written to cover the 2 movies?
Hopefully this turns out better then those movies based on The Matrix: Online. UGH.
Drakken stuns me. Awesome post, Amber.

Amber, I occasionally link your blog to friends when there’s something I think they’d find particularly funny. I’ve just learned that a specific friend, we’ll call him Carl (because that’s his name), finds your brand of humor confusing. He would appreciate it if you started using <truth> and <joke> tags. I guess I’ll have to ask him if he goes by the name Drakken ever.
@Sweetmeat: Thanks!
@Bartoneus: Yeah, I think basing a movie on a collectible card game is going just a little too far.
@Ben: Now where would the fun in that be? You might as well ask the spider to post a big sign saying “ATTENTION FLIES: TURN AROUND NOW!” =P
@Carl: Hiya!
You can’t be serious.
Wow or is it WoW? Apparently you have a lot of new readers today Amber. Soon they will understand that you never joke about Peter Jackson’s Middle Earth.
Obviously, Drakken and his ilk are just viral marketers trying to build hype around these so-called “books”. I’ve never seen them, and I’ve been to bookstores! Nice try, New Line Advertising.
DEAR GOD NO!! just no….bad Peter Jackson BAD, put that novel DOWN!
if there is such a thing a justice for the MMO and Movie going public i say thee NAY!
sorry amber but … the time has come for Peter “im a hobbet no honestly look at my feet” Jackson to quit what ever hes smoking in that clay pipe of his and actualy listen to whatpeople have been saying, now dont get me wrong i enjoyed the LoTR movies but perhaps just maby creating substandard modernised “parodies” for all intents for an MMO background and treating with the same respect as the origional works is nothign short of scandelous.
just one bloggers opinion…
oh Amber just a quick heads up i podcast advertised your Blog again so expect more peeps from Utterz and Aries Antics to be spamming your wonderfull little site sometime today or tomorrow.
You’re a peach Aries, thanks for the plug!
Amber needs to do more fact checking. Her baseless claims are rediculous and unfounded, and everyone knows she doesn’t know what she is talking about…
The upcoming movies are not based on LoTRO, but rather Middle-Earth 2 the single player game.
