Mark Jacobs to EA: “BTW Your Tea Is Floating In The Harbor, Bitches”
Mark Jacobs on the recent decision to cut 4 classes and 6 cities out of Warhammer:
“This has nothing to do with EA,” he said, pointing out that this was entirely a Mythic decision, and it isn’t a directive from the company which many MMO players feel has a dubious history in our genre. “they had zero input in this. This is not something we went to them with and said ‘hey guys, we need an extra few months…’ and they said ‘no, you must ship on this day’. They don’t even know about it. It’s not a discussion we would have with them.”
(emphasis mine.)
Yes…you, faithful gamer, are learning of these profound tidings, freshly ground, brewed, and strained through the fine silver mesh that is mmorpg.com, even as the shadowy entities who rule EA with Madden-like totalitarianism dream their dark dreams, submerged in luminous baths of Sanya Thomas’ bitter, bitter tears, unaware of the strange, prophetic happenings leagues away, deep within the Fairfax collective. When at last the elders emerge from their unlife-sustaining torpor, it will be…too late.

Oh, that was just classic.

I think a lot of the ruckus about this is seeing that _4_ classes are being removed and we think: Well that seems like an awful lot when an MMO only has ~8, something must have really gone wrong with their scheduling. Or at least that’s where I was when I stopped thinking about it last week. With Tycho mentioning today that there are 24 classes still remaining, I find this announcement to be less deserving of the attention it is getting.

Fairfax? All we have here are pregnant hippies driving beemer crossovers, an awesome organic ice cream shop and a tribute to Garcia near the town redwood grove.. What collective?

The weirdness of this, to me, was that they are not eliminating any of the ranged classes, just two tanks and two melee DPS. This is, to me, speaks of some weirdness of the HTH combat system.

I don’t know. If you look at the classes they cut in terms of identity, it seems fairly straightforward. I mean, whats the difference between a dwarven ironbreaker (the tank heir apparent) and a dwarven hammerer (heavily armored melee dps?)? It’d be hard to justify both these classes without deviating significantly from the Warhammer ip, which is kind of the whole point.

The hammerer was clad in light armor and used two handed weapons according to the pics. Same thing for the Choppas.
Why cut the DE tank? Or the Empire one, for pity’s sake. Altdorf is the capital city they kept! But no humans can be tanks? I am going to speculate that these classes were horribly out of balance, probably too weak in the DE and Human case and too strong in the DPS cases.

It’s going to be pretty difficult to speculate on why a certain class was cut, or the wisdom of cutting it when the game hasn’t even launched. It’s still beta, which means it’s still being developed. Back before a single line of code was written there were probably class cuts. I do think it’s a better idea to ship with too few classes than too many, especially if some of those too many are broken. (DAoC Theurgist anyone?)
My commentary on the post, by the way, isn’t a criticism of the cuts, but a poke in Mark Jacobs’ eye, who always manages to squat and piss a remark like this during an otherwise mostly urine free interview.
