In the hopes of reducing spam, I’ve had a Capcha plugin added to comments. If you really really hate it, you can bypass it by registering an account here. Look over on the left under the “Meta” heading, and then Register. Very sorry about this.

I’ve done a little testing and it seems to be working. If you have problems though, please drop me a line at ambe...@gmail.com.

Meta: Housecleaning

1) Even with my handy-dandy math plugin, I'm still getting a *ton* of spam. Fortunately Akismet has been catching it all, but with close to 300 spams a day, I can no longer sift through it all, looking for false positives. So if you post a comment and it disappears, you'll probably want to either re-post it to appear less spammy or drop me a line and I'll see if I can dredge it up. Sorry kids, it's why we can't have nice things. (If you've never posted before, your post is automatically held for moderation. I try to get to those pretty quickly, so don't worry if it doesn't show up right away.)

2) In a couple weeks I'm going to start going through my links and clearing out any that seem to be dead or abandoned. So if you're linked here, haven't posted to your blog in months, and would still like to be linked here, either post something (fer chrissakes!) or drop me a line and say purty-please.

3) New policy: Attention blog trolls. If you send me hate mail that's really really funny in a sub-human mouth-breathing sort of way, you're on notice that I may post it on the blog without asking your permission. I may also forward it to your mom. Or George Takei.

Geez, it's getting so a girl can't take a little time off to down a couple 40's and watch the Full House marathon. And you know how cranky I get without my Saget.

I don't know when Amber Night: The Blog became The Hague: The Blog, but I have no interest whatsoever in serving as ground zero for disagreements that have nothing to do with this site or its content. The comments have been getting more heated than usual, and are starting to resemble the WoW forums a little too closely. That's not good.

So if you plan to post, please follow these guidelines:

- Be as mean as you want with me (as long as you have a point), but be respectful to other commenters.

- Be weird if you want. Weird is good. That's what we're here for. Hostile, however, is not of the body.

- Try to stay on topic, or at least on the same blog.

- If you are angry at the owner of another website, then go to that website and yell at them. At this point I still do not control the internet. But check back frequently.

- If your own website has questionable or non-standard editing practices, please do not link to it from here.

- If someone still doesn't understand or agree with you after a few rounds, let it go. Breathe. Get yourself one of those cute little zen gardens.

In turn, I promise:

- to be respectful. To you, the commenter, that is. Business as usual to everyone else.

- if I edit your comment, I will completely remove it and note that I did so. Unless you are an obvious troll or spammer, and then I'll just remove it.

- to be either drunk or stoned every time I post. Hell that's an easy one.

Just for Joe, no cookie requirement on the math plugin now. I'll have you know I did it myself. Had to vee-eye the file and everything. (kidding, I'm actually vi and shell proficient, so nyeah.) There was some obscure comment in the code about not requiring cookies being less secure, so I'm going on faith that I don't all of a sudden start getting clobbered by spam comments.

Drop an email please if I comments are broken for you. Welcome to off-the-grid!

Welcome to the new and improved jungle.

There’s still a lot to do, but I think it’s stable enough to go ahead and cut over. Please post here any problems you experience.

Some new features that I think you’ll appreciate:

Gravatars. Signup at Gravatar.com and personalize your comments with an image of your choice. Or don’t, and you get to be a ladybug.
Live comment preview. This is a pretty cool plugin that lets you see what your comment will look like as you’re typing. Saves you a click on a preview button. I’ve also added a Quicktags plugin so you can easily prettyfy your comments.
Anonymous commenters will find it easier to post a comment. Instead of that annoying captcha system, now you just have to do some simple math.
Some other things that work behind the scenes. (like an XML feed that really works, and a spam filter that doesn’t block legitimate users.)

It will take DNS about 24 hours to catch up, so if you’re still seeing the old site, be patient.

Edit: The XML feed has been fixed.

Meta post: Construction Update

Oh let me be your sledgehammer.

The new site is coming along nicely, and I’m told you can start creating user accounts over there if you like. You can also leave comments on the new site, as the database and whatever other things that were currently in a state of flux are now…um…de-fluxified. Just remember that the URL (new.ambernight.org) is just a placeholder for now, so don’t permalink to it. If you have linked to posts I’ve written, I’m told that your links will, through the magic of Apache, point correctly to the new link when we go live. So no need to change your links unless you really want to. RSS feeds should also be unaffected.

Drop an email or comment if you see anything wonky in your browser. The layout is mostly finalized, but there are most likely going to be bugs. Now is the time to point out anything annoying (besides me) because once it’s done, I’m thinking my designer will have changed his email address and phone number, followed up by a restraining order.
